With warmer weather here, you may be like us and start to make more smoothies for breakfast. Smoothies are super convenient and a great way to get in fruits and veggies; however, if you do not like bananas, then making smoothies creamy and tasty can feel difficult. You could always put in a non-dairy yogurt, but not everyone loves the taste. So, the trick is to find something that doesn’t have too strong of a taste, but makes your smoothie thick and creamy!

Plus, although bananas are convenient in smoothies, sometime you need an option with a low glycemic index to help maintain blood sugar levels, or keep you more full in the afternoon. The options below will help to do just that! Simply swap out the frozen banana with one of the items below, whip up your favorite smoothie or one from here or the nutrition plan, and you will be good to go!

Frozen Cauliflower

Go for frozen cauliflower florets, so they are easier to blend. You can use up to a cup here, and then simply put in the rest of your favorite fruits and flavorings. One we like to do is cauliflower, about a cup of frozen strawberries, 1 tbsp. peanut butter and almond milk. You could even add in a tsp. of cacao powder if you really want!

Frozen Zucchini

Frozen zucchini is another great option. Zucchini does have more water, so your smoothie may be a little thinner, but you can add ice or spinach to your smoothie to also help with the thickness. We have swapped zucchini in our green smoothies, and often like to add a little pineapple for sweetness.

Smoothie bowl recipe using avocado

Avocado

Avocado is a thickening master! You typically only need to use a 1/4 to a 1/2 of an avocado as it does such a great job of thickening your smoothie, and could actually make it too thick if you put it all in. A great recipe using avocado can be found here.

Silken Tofu

Yes, tofu. Now before you run away, if you have never had tofu before, it is a lot less scary than it sounds! Tofu does not really have much flavor at all. The beauty of tofu is that is takes on the flavors of other things you may cook or season it with. So when you add tofu to your smoothie, you will simply taste the fruit or veggies that you put in. When using silken tofu, start with a 1/4 to 1/2 of a package, add in the rest of your ingredients, blend and enjoy! Silken tofu will give you such a creamy smoothie, that we bet you’ll go back for more!
