Today we are sharing another new smoothie recipe, and talking about a new ingredient that you may or may not have used before: Maca!

What is Maca?

Maca is a plant that grows in Peru, and the root of the plant is ground into Maca powder, which has a butterscotch type of smell to it. Some also describe it as a nutty/chocolatey smell and taste. Maca has actually been around for thousands of years, and has been used to help enhance energy, memory, and even help with infertility.

Other Benefits?

Maca is actually an adaptogen. That means that it naturally helps the body to adapt and normalize to things like stress. Feeling tired? Maca can also help your body to feel energized!

Side Effects?

With anything, there are potential side effects. Although Maca is likely safe for you to take, make sure you read your labels and do not overdo it with the amount you use. Additionally, if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, please consult with your doctor first.

How do I Use Maca?

You can cook and bake with Maca, and you can use it in drinks, like the Maca hot chocolate recipe from your nutrition plan. You can also try out the new smoothie recipe below:

Maca Berry Smoothie recipe

-1/2 frozen, sliced banana
-5 to 7 strawberries
-1 tbsp. peanut or other nut butter
-1 tsp. maca powder
-3/4 cup of unsweetened almond or coconut milk. Can also sub water or coconut water
-Optional pinch of cinnamon powder

Blend all ingredients together until smooth. Add more almond milk a little at a time if needed to reach desired consistency.
