This is a question that we get asked all of the time, and there are pros and cons to both eating or not eating before a workout, so lets break it down:

First and foremost, when you wake up in the morning, you should always hydrate! Leave a glass of water by your bed as a reminder if needed, just make sure you drink up. If you are a member of our plan, then you know that we always start our mornings with Fairburn Fuel! This is important because it not only hydrates you, but also helps to hold you over until breakfast time. Plus, when you wake up in the morning, you are essentially dehydrated from sleeping, so you need to replenish yourself.

Since we recommend and highly encourage you to workout in the morning – not only does it set you up for success, but you can actually fairburn more calories in the morning (we go into this more in the plan) – 95% of the time we drink our Fairburn Fuel and then workout right away.  Therefore, we do not eat until after we complete our workout. However, it is important to eat a clean breakfast within 30 minutes of finishing your workout so your hard work does not go to waste!

Now, there are times (that other 5%) when we wake up and for whatever reason we are just freaking hungry! When this happens, we usually have a piece of toast, ½ of a banana or a handful of almonds and drink our Fairburn Fuel to help hold us over.  If this happens to you, just eat something very light so that you are not feeling starved, but you also won’t fill up so much that your workout will not have the same benefits.

On the other hand, if you are going to be working out for over 30 minutes or up to an hour or more, then you should absolutely eat something beforehand. If we are training for long runs or going to a spin class, we will always eat first, give ourselves a little time to digest, and then go workout. These meals are usually a piece of toast with peanut butter and banana and then we refuel afterward with a refreshing and filling smoothie or breakfast, like some of the ones here! Just be smart and think about the type of exercise you are performing. If you are doing an at home routine and a light jog or some yoga, you do not need to eat beforehand. However, if you are going on a long run, doing an hour of hot yoga, etc., then fuel your body to help give you the needed energy!

Ultimately, it comes down to this – we strongly recommend working out in the morning before you eat breakfast! However, always listen to your body and give yourself some fuel before a workout if needed.
