A while ago we discussed why we do not like to count calories, but since we are asked about calorie counts a lot, we wanted to revisit this topic. Before you continue reading, we want you to know this:
Low calorie does not always mean healthy, and high calorie does not always mean bad!
It is pretty common to go grocery shopping and immediately turn something over to look at the number of calories in a product. Or if you have ever eaten at a restaurant that labels calories per meal, it seems obvious that you should go for the lowest calorie count, right? Well, not necessarily. Unfortunately many things in the media focus on calorie counts and when you see a healthier meal cooked on a news show, they usually tend to say something like, “and this all comes in under x number of calories!”
Calories can be important to know, but it is more important to take it a step further. When you see something that has 200 calories, what are those calories made up of? If it’s all added sugar and sodium, then it’s not something you want to be eating. On the other hand, if something is 300 calories, but it has more than just sugar and sodium and has beneficial nutrients, then that is something you want to eat.
There are plenty of foods out there that have little to no calories that are excellent for you – i.e. carrots, celery, blueberries, leafy greens, etc. – but there are also plenty of lower calorie items out there that are not good for you! For example, let’s say you have a 100 calorie pack of mini crackers and a banana that has roughly 120 calories. Just going off of calories, the snack pack seems healthier. However, when you look at the label of the snack pack, you’ll see a lot of sodium, artificial sweeteners, and loads of other ingredients that no one can pronounce. This is why we do not like counting calories or only looking at calories on labels. It can be very deceiving! Especially when foods like avocados, which are so great for you, are around 235 calories!
We know it is hard to not look at calories, and we don’t want you to go to the other extreme and eat thousands of calories every day either. However, please know that calories are not the be all end all. If you focus on eating clean, whole, foods, then you will not have to stress over every calorie going into your body.
